A Carrington event would be Bad. How bad?
Think no power or communication. Think of the consequences of that loss.
While likely not as bad as depicted in "One Second After", It would likely be bad. Very Bad. No one knows for sure. Could be only an inconvenience. Could be worse that we think.
If you live in an area where Ice Storms are common, you've likely been inconvenienced by power outages for hours/days/weeks. Most people get their power back in a few hours or at worst a few days. Imagine that squared. No power for your TV/internet or your fridge. (and no internet, period, but we'll get to that later), no power for your heater. No way to get fuel for your generator (if you even have one). No resolution after weeks or months.
Your home is likely similar to mine. You need AC power to run your fridge, your oven, your furnace. You need gas or electric power for your water heater and/or your furnace. You need AC to run your well (if you have one) or your water company needs it for their pumps (they may have backup, diesel powered pumps, but for how long do they store fuel? Enough to power the pumps for WEEKS??) What about if you live in the south? Can you survive without air conditioning? If not, you'd better have a plan.
Every service needs power. Even if only 10% of the power distribution infrastructure is damaged, it could take years to repair. Many transformers are built to specific need, and are not stocked in quantity. Several years ago, due to an ice storm, many power poles in my area were broken due to the weight of ice and snow (and wind). The utilities ran out of replacement poles, and restoration of power to many homes was delayed for a week or so while additional sources for the 3000+ poles were found and said poles were trucked to the area. Now think about transformers which have 3-5 week lead times, maybe 3-4 months....Multiplied by the thousands. And trucks which have no fuel and therefore cannot move said equipment to the areas needed, even if they could be produced without power to begin with. How do we find enough people with the knowledge to put Humpty-Dumpty back together again quickly?
How about your local stores? With no computerized registers, how are they going to be able to take your money for the food you need? How about ordering? How will the trucks get there to bring food, even if they have a way to reorder? What about the meat that you need....and milk? Not going to last long in the summer without refrigeration. No bread either, because the bakery is down without power, and they only keep 2 days (if that) of flour on hand.
Now add in the failure of most communications devices. No telephone for weeks/months. No cell phones. No internet/cable. Not that it matters, because many folks won't have any power to run those devices. No internet/digital lines for communication. No working (or at least only partially working) switching centers for the internet and phone lines. Likely no satellite communication either. Even if you can power these devices with generators, the surge will likely have damaged the equipment. And again, where do all these generators come from? How about the fuel to run them?
So if you have no AC and no communications, how do you distribute food ? How do you move the fuel needed to transport all the repair parts (and technicians), the food and other supplies we need in order to survive? How many people have more than a few days of food on hand, or the means to store or or acquire it without a working transportation infrastructure?
Lets not forget that with no communications, there is no banking as we know it today. Few actual dollars are transported, compared to the real amounts of "money" we move with ones and zeros, passed from computer to computer, with little actual cash passed from bank to bank. How do stores pay for the food and supplies that they want to order (but can't because there is no communication). How do YOU get paid, in order that you can pay the store for the food? (that they don't have, and cannot order, and are unable to have delivered....)
With no working phone system, how do you call for the police (who can't get there because they have no fuel for their vehicles) when someone decides that your meager supply of food would be better used by him and his family/group rather than by you and yours? The thin veneer of civilization will not last when people are faced with hunger (especially when THEIR children are crying because their stomachs are empty).
There is no place to go, as your choices are either bad, or worse locations in which to live. Few areas will want refugees, because they have the same issues from which you were retreating. Few are going to want to share what little food and shelter they have, as this is no short term thing. Many folks will be forced to make hard choices between their sense of charity and compassion and feeding their families. Likely, you, as an outsider, will find yourself unwelcome should you try to find a better place to take your family.
I'm not saying that this will happen, nor am I saying that everyone will go "Mad Max" and our society will break down. Nor am I saying that the US will end. But for a few months, maybe a year or two, things will be very different from the reality we now experience. The US is strong, and the people (for the most part) resilient. Rebuilding would likely happen quickly.
HOWEVER: While there are those in this society who will work hard to make things better, there are also those who expect things to be handed to them in today's society, and who will be willing to take what is yours with very little thought or remorse if things go "SMASH". If you think everyone is going to be nice in such a situation, you are a fool. Right now, there are criminals. People with moralities and values which bear little resemblance to yours or mine. And let's face it, right now things are relatively good, and relatively prosperous. Wait until things get hard. If the luxury of AC power goes away.... if the work done by coal and atoms and hydropower ceases to exist, then there will be many more whose morality will crumble. A higher concentration, perhaps, in the inner cities, but many are living not too far from your home right now. Many are held in check and behave only because the federal and state government essentially provide them with enough food and other basics... they are bribed to behave. And many of the people you meet on the street and in stores will follow their lead, once they lose THEIR jobs (and the support/comfort/food/shelter that they gain from those jobs). That nice guy who lives on the corner? He works, and he is happy, and comfortable, and law abiding. But take away the job, and the income, and the supplies and food and comfort which they supply, and see if he is still a nice guy when he is cold, and hungry, and his kids haven't eaten in a week. Bet he isn't that nice guy you thought he was. You'd better not be a nice guy either. Doesn't mean you should become an animal, but you'd better be careful, and you'd better not trust him. You really don't know him that well. Likely he won't trust you either.
I'd like to believe that most of us are moral, hard working people. And likely most of us would continue to be. But enough folks won't be that things will be different. No police to help. Most cities will empty, as people attempt to find food and water and shelter that doesn't require electrical power to make it habitable. People will likely follow roads to areas that are perceived to be better. If you think I am wrong, look at what happened during Katrina. Most people that were affected waited for help. Some, however, took the opportunity to loot what they could, and then when they became hungry and thirsty they began moving to other areas. IIRC, the Police Chief of Gretna, which is a municipality outside of New Orleans, set up a roadblock to keep people out of the town, and made them wait for aid. Probably not a bad idea. But what happens after a few weeks? Who is going to stop people like them then?
FEMA plans on having private contractors (truckers) bring the materials they need to help rebuild. Again, where are the truckers going to find fuel? And, while FEMA and the Army and other government folks did an adequate job post Katrina, they were stretched to the limit.
Multiply Katrina by a factor of 50. Subtract fuel. Subtract the idea of moving people to areas not damaged. Add in the chaos caused by little or no communication. Subtract electrical power...Add in a bit of hunger after 2 or more weeks. Subtract police presence. You do the math here.
The result? I really hope that what I see is wrong. But if you are smart, you'll look at the above equation and come up with a plan for it. Can you plan for everything? NOPE. But you can plan for many of the issues. Have a plan to feed your family for a month or two. Have a plan to keep the food that you have prepared and your shelter in YOUR possession. Have a plan for keeping your house habitable. Know where there is a source of water, and how to get it safely, and make it safe to drink. Plan on an alternate source of heat, if you live in an area where you need heat in the winter. Figure out what to do when there is no water for waste disposal. If you have no skills, then think about acquiring some.
Plan for, and PREPARE for these things now. THEN is too late. NOW is the time. How to prepare depends on your location, your circumstances, and your abilities.

So this would lead one to ask.....If the Liberal driven UK chooses to defund (at least their portion) the UN, can it really be that important? (We all know the answer to that, but to the liberals, it was a Big Thing).
One would wonder why the loss of funding, unless it was because they needed the money for their pet liberal projects inside the country, and the darkies, wogs, slant-eyes and furriners be damned.
But maybe I am just cynical.....

It all be 'cause they lowlifes
no one wants lowlife, ghetto thugs living in their neighborhood.
No One.
It's not that these people are racist. Some are, after all, black. But they don't want bad people fleeing a place where they helped to make a ghetto moving into their neighborhoods, where they will make the new place a new ghetto.
What we see here is class issues. People moved to middle class suburbs for a reason. And they don't want lowlifes to invade their neighborhoods and bring crime or blight to their homes and schools.
That is not racism, it is realism.

Now, while I am all for free speech, and I support the police choosing to support the union folks in their protest, I have several issues:
1. They were in full anti riot kit. IMO, this is a uniform. Had they been wearing civilian clothing, and not identifying themselves as police, then I would have few issues (although one might wonder about their loyalties, but that is another matter for another time).
B. Any time the police refuse to implement a lawful order...I.E :
"We have been ordered by the legislature to kick you all out at 4:00 today. But we know what’s right from wrong. We will not be kicking anyone out, in fact, we will be sleeping here with you!"
then they have broken their oaths and they should be subject to disciplinary action and/or terminated. While I am sympathetic to their dilemma, they have to choose their sides. (and this is a LAWFUL order, not an unlawful one that they could legally decide to ignore).
III. If they choose to abrogate their responsibilities in support of the union, then that is indeed a choice that they have the right to make, they are free citizens after all, and can make the choice to side with the unions. They have a right to their opinions, and the right to support anyone they choose. BUT THEY CANNOT DECIDE WHICH LAWS THEY WILL ENFORCE AND WHICH THEY WILL NOT. It is an "all or nothing" thing here. There are no illegal or unconstitutional orders being given. It's not like anyone can occupy the capitol at any time. Had I chosen to "occupy" the capitol 2 months ago, I would have been asked to leave, and then removed, had I chosen to ignore that order, possibly with trespassing charges thrown in for good measure.
What we have here is people with conflicting loyalties who have shown us that they will not uphold the laws nor the (lawful) orders of their superiors. And this makes them unreliable, and unsuitable to be police. In any fashion. If the police cannot be depended upon to enforce order, no matter what their leanings, then they cannot be police.

Range report
So I got my new Para 3" carry LDA last week at the gun show and got to shoot it both Wednesday and Sunday.
I gotta say that the firearm is a nice one. A few hundred more rounds and I might begin to think that this thing is carry-worthy. I already have it's alloy framed brother, and like the LDA trigger and find that the 3" 1911 style is great for my carry needs.
Because this is for carry, I have to have great confidence in this firearm. A failure on the range is, at worst, an inconvenience. A failure of a carry gun, should it happen, can be devastating. I never carry a firearm that has not loaded, fired, and ejected at least 500 rounds with no issues which are not ammo related.
I am well on my way there with this firearm. I have fired 400 rounds through it, including Wed. and Sunday. While it won't eat 185g semi-wadcutter, It likes ball, and RNL, in either 230g or 200g versions and seems to like hollowpoints (including Gold Dots, my carry cartridge of choice)
This thing shoots, from a rest, 3" at 50 feet. using a two-had grip, I can shoot 4" and 6" single strong hand. It is easy to handle. I was staying on target at 7 yards and floating 3 cases in the air.
I like it. As I said, zero failures for anything even approaching the design of the original cartridge as designed by JMB (PBUH).
Another week or so (if I get off my ass and do some reloading) and I will be sending it off to a 'smith for the installation of tritium sight.
If you ever have the option of trying the LDA trigger, I would highly recommend it.

I never carry a firearm that has not loaded, fired, and ejected at least 500 rounds with no issues which are not ammo related.
I am well on my way there with this firearm. I have fired 400 rounds through it, including Wed. and Sunday. While it won't eat 185g semi-wadcutter, It likes ball, and RNL, in either 230g or 200g versions and seems to like hollowpoints (including Gold Dots, my carry cartridge of choice)
This thing shoots, from a rest, 3" at 50 feet. using a two-had grip, I can shoot 4" and 6" single strong hand. It is easy to handle. I was staying on target at 7 yards and floating 3 cases in the air.
I like it. As I said, zero failures for anything even approaching the design of the original cartridge as designed by JMB (PBUH).
Another week or so (if I get off my ass and do some reloading) and I will be sending it off to a 'smith for the installation of tritium sight.
If you ever have the option of trying the LDA trigger, I would highly recommend it.

That things are not going well for the (ahem) "progressives" these days.
And that the tide is turning away from liberalist/socialist/statist ideas in government and those who would push that philosophy on the rest of us. Their message, despite being spun by the sympathetic media is falling on ever deafer and more unsympathetic ears.
It's not that the people have suddenly changed their mind about such policies, it is that most of the population of this country (many of whom are sheep most of the time), have come to realize just what the agendas and goals are of those politicians and their supporters.
Take the latest example: Wisconsin public unions. The unions (and therefore the members) have demanded outrageous salaries AND benefits. Now where once a government worker accepted lower wages for the wonderful security, insurance, and retirements, Today's civil service employee expects all the wonderful benefits (the like which is seldom seen in the private sector) AND fully expects a wage which is significantly higher than that of an equivalent private sector employee as well. And, more importantly, they seem to feel that it is their due.
Forget the issues with efficiency and productivity, forget the lack of caring whether the job is done, or done correctly. Forget the issues with accountability for a job done well. The fact is that these folks care little how much of our tax money is spent in order to keep THEIR standard of living at the level it currently is. They care not how much of a burden they place on their fellow citizens, nor do they care if the state (or county/municipality) goes bankrupt, as long as they get their large slice of that meaty pie.
Their main problem today is a lack of support from the masses. Where once they were able to spin things to make their socialist agenda look good, as they were able to spin the message of prosperity and such in order to hide the socialist roots of their philosophy, they can no longer do so. Despite a sympathetic media, and despite support from Mr. O. (the big cheeze himself) public perceptions of the demands of the public sector unions is one of greedy, petulant children. Where once people expected such tactics from any union, and just ignored them, today people are realizing that the unions and their members (not always the same thing) are only concerned with themselves. The tactics of the SEIU and AFSCME and others are DAMAGING to the nation, and can no longer be cloaked in sunlight. The bussing in of thousands and thousands of other union members from other states is a dismal failure. The flight of the bought and paid for Democratic legislators is seen for what it really is, an attempt to stall for time by legislators who received a significant percentage of their campaign funds from unions, money paid for by union dues. Money that ultimately comes to those inflated paychecks from the taxes paid for by Joe citizen.....That guy who is ever burdened by those increasing taxes, and who is happy to have ANY job, much less one with outrageous pay and incredible benefits.
When greater than 70% of the rest of us have either taken cuts in pay, given back benefits or perks, or have little or no job security see this, we are, at best, unsympathetic to these folks. And we will remember those legislators who support such antics by our employees.
And the media is once again showing its true colors. Sticking stubbornly to its old ways of biased, double standard laced coverage of the event, they fail to realize that the internet, by providing a secondary path for information, is slowly eroding their credibility and showing that they are truly no longer news organizations but rather propaganda outlets for the liberal, statist, socialist power blocks. Their credibility is as good as that of "Baghdad Bob".
This incident, and the ones which are associated with it will cause a change for the better in our society. People will soon expect more from our public employees. And accept less bad behavior from our unions. I think that this is the beginning of the end of the unions. And that will lead, in part, to the end of theLiberals Democrats. Their money will decrease, and therefore their influence. The people, even those who may be sheep, will finally see what has been apparent to many of the rest of us for years. For without the support of the people, the socialist/union/liberal/statists and the groups who are allied with them will fail, they will lose power and become a footnote in history....until they try again.

wonder if this is how the Greek protests started???
So it would seem that the good union folks in Madison have decided to protest the fact that they will now be treated as all the rest of the citizens will be treated. Like those in the private sector, public sector folks might actually have to take a hit on retirement, pay, and benefits.
Seems that they are angry that they have to be treated as the rest of us are....And that they cannot keep gorging at the public trough. That the rest of the Citizens will not sacrifice more in order that they should not have to deal with tougher economic times...
Too fuckin' bad they, boys and girls. You got great bennies, AND great pay for a long time. Now the Gravy Train seems to be losing steam, and you want all your perks to continue, even though there isn't any cash to pay for them.
And why you think that as a public servant you have the right to strike, (or even do a sick out) I have no idea. Want to be able to strike?? Find a private sector job. As it is, you are getting benefits and retirements that most private sector folks would love to have...(Unless you work for GM or something....and we know how that business plan seems to be working....
Will they riot? Throw cheese? They are already threatening violence against the folks who are making the laws......You know, those duly elected representatives of the people?
Or does Democracy only work when you agree with what is happening?I wonder what would happen if all of us who are unhappy with Obamacare chose to demand (with violence and threats) that Obamacare be repealed.....
I also think that if any of those protesters who called in sick can be identified ion the capitol grounds, then there should be disciplinary action taken.

Adventures in Impromptu teaching
So my brother purchased a 1911.
And, of course, wanted a lesson on how to feed and care for said new acquisition. (he'll seldom own a piece of machinery unless he is intimate with the workings of it's innards, and his machinery, be it a tractor or a watch, is always well cared for. So he wanted a quick lesson.
"No problem", says I..... pulling out a 1911-A1.
We go through field stripping and reassembly. He learns that it is easy to field strip and reassemble. Does it himself a few times.
...Then to detail stripping...Demonstrating, I remove the grips, safety, beavertail and hammer...I show him how each part can be used to remove the next (the 1911 is it's own toolbox!)...we get the mainspring and leaf spring out... I get the sear and disconnector out of the frame, remove the magazine release and then the trigger from the now empty frame.... demonstrate the action of the trigger, sear, and disconnector, and then....
I drop the damned sear.
Which flies off into the great unknown. Or somehow reached 88 MPH on the way down and departed for the future....Or maybe transported itself off the planet or something....
Seriously. we look and look, and look. And the part has apparently evaporated on it's way down.
We got out magnets and flashlights and other implements of search and recovery. No dice (dice we could have found!)
After terminating the lesson, he leaves, and I continue to look. And look. And look. And look...
Finally, MC brings out the vacuum and when moving a piece of furniture 10 feet from where we were working, finds the sear.
How can a piece weighing less than a gram fly so far?

Why is it
That no one makes a decent production 1911 in .40 (or even better in .357 Sig)?
Some folks make 1911 pattern firearms in 9mm (Warthog and such) but unless you are willing to shell out Big Bucks, there are no decently priced 1911 s in anything but .45 ACP. And nearly nothing in .40 or .357 Sig.

Not what you expect from a chaotic dictatorship in decline
Via Say Uncle, there is this story, where the remains of the government is applauding the use of "illegal weapons" and civilian/neighborhood militias to keep law and order.
Contrast this with the US, and especially New Orleans/Louisiana National Guard and LEO post Katrina.
Yet we think that those folks in Egypt are uncivilized.
Seems that they are doing a decent job enforcing local law and order if left alone. But the left thinks that we, in the US, cant and won't be able to do the same.

So the police....
were warning people to get off the roads during Snowmageddon. Now, I will agree that most people had neither the skill in driving nor the equipment to be out on the roads during the height of the storm (and I was out only by necessity, with a 4wd truck mind you, and went back to base as soon as possible, ), but to threaten people with fines for exercising their right to be stupid travel is IMO, not constitutional.
You should have seen the look on the sheriffs face when I told him that, and asked how he could follow orders when he know they were unconstitutional. I asked him if his oath was to uphold and defend the constitution?
He just grimaced and asked me to move along.

If you are needing a belt that is well made, and bulletproof....Or at least as tough as nails, take a look at The Holster Site . I ordered one of his belts and loved it so much that I ordered a second, this time in basketweave.
These things are very well made, stitched and glued to perfection. Lined with, I believe, a kevlar weave between the two layers of leather. They come with an awesome warranty and are built like a brick outhouse.
I was so impressed, that he and I are now discussing a custom holster for my 1911. It likely won't be cheap, but I am willing to pay well for my gunleather as long as it is well built and functional, and I think that, based upon my experience with the belt(s) that it will be.
His leather is (mostly) sourced from the US, and each item is assembled in the US, by a US citizen no less.

While the blizzard in Chicago (and the surrounding area) was bad, the denizens of Chicago must be (some of them at least) the weakest, most lily livered bunch of weaklings I have ever seen. I am fully aware how cold it was, and how windy it was that night. I WAS OUT IN IT, thank you very much. I didn't have any choice either.
(perhaps the all pervasive welfare state and union influence is causing the weakest to not be culled from the herd....)

Couldn't walk a hundred feet to safety. Jesus H. Tapdancing CHrist. It was cold. It was windy. It was dangerous. But if you can't walk a few hundred feet with your back to the wind (and yes, the wind was from the east, so the wind would have been at her back while walking towards the rest of the city (look at a map)) then either you are one weak sister or you failed to bother to dress for winter conditions (even mild winter conditions) in Chicago.
And any car with a half tank of gas should be able to idle for at least 8 hours to keep you warm. If people ran out of gas waiting for rescue then they weren't prepared.
Shoulda let them get colder so they'd learn next time.
People were warned to stay off the Drive, but they went anyway. So the city tied up how many hundreds of man hours to deal with the idiots?

It's Groundhog Day!
Not a chance that the little rodent is gonna see his shadow. Not a chance.
HE"D HAVE TO TUNNEL THROUGHT THE SNOW TO GET TO THE SURFACE FIRST!
I hope they make groundhog sized snowblowers.
Having been dealing with the blizzard all night, I am not sure how much total snow we have here. But the drifts are shoulder high in some places. Likely 16" of actual snow so far. Maybe a bit less, maybe a bit more.
Anyway, for most of you, this is no doubt old hat, but do you remember this?

Snowmageddon!!!!!!!
The media is ALL OVER the fact that we might (maybe) get as much as (OMG!!) 2 feet of snow. While this IS a significant amount in one drop, it is not a suprise, nor is it terribly unusual. It happens every 8-10 years on average.
You'd think that the apocalypse was coming.
I figure it'll disrupt my normal routine for 24-48 hours. (if that). If the power lines go down, then I'll start the gennie, other than that, it'll be a non event.
And if yer prepared, that is how it should be.

Hiding from the past.....
So it would seem that the NAACP folks in South Carolina are easily offended....
In order to use the State Capitol steps, and not make anyonequake in their shoes Pee themselves in fear have the vapors seeing a president who owned slaves 200+ years ago, the Anti white rally Anti confederate flag protest organizers placed a box in front of a bronze statue of President Washington.
What, really, did they accomplish here? Insulting someone? Hiding from the history of this country? No one can change who our first (white) president was. Yes, he was a slave owner. Yes, he no doubt did many things that were, by todays standards, less than good.
Deal with the past. Hiding from it will not make it go away. The fact that many of the attendees freely travelled thousands of miles to be at the trally shows that things are NOT like they were 235 + years ago. Think of it. Hundreds of black people travelled thousands of miles, freely....Unmolested. Yet they feel they are still opppressed. They were able to travel to this rally, yet they are economically disadvantaged.

You'll get more votes and a hell of a lot more money if you do so. RINOs will lead you to more people departing from the Republican Party. Conservative candidates will more than likely win.

A question:
We have seen absolutely ZERO footage of the mobs looting in the flooded areas in Australia. No reports of gangs of people looting stores for big screen TVs, DVD players, shoes etc.
It would seem that everyone is doing what they can to help each other out.
And this from folks whose ancestors were inmates in what was once a prison colony.....
Yet it happens here in the US all the time. Looting, theft. etc. Any time there is any disaster...even a major power outage. Looting happens at the slightest suggestion of civil unrest, or anytime the po-po might be occupied elsewhere.
It could be that there is simply no coverage of the looting, but I doubt that. I think that there is no (or very little) looting.
If so, then I have to ask, what is up with the folks in the US?
I really don't want to go there, ....where the obvious answer is.

Seems that AZ has enacted emergency legislation to prevent anyone from protesting at a funeral.
I seriously am of two minds about this:
On the one hand, eventually someone is going to take offense enough of these asswipes and either beat them to death, or do a physics experiment on projectile deformation and deceleration using them as a subject. Eventually Darwin will find them and deal with them accordingly. They have no shame, no taste, and no class.
On the other hand, this is a serious affront to the First Amendment.
Slippery slope and all that. Me? I'd make sure that the police were occupied elsewhere. Who knows what might happen??? I do, however think that this is a bad idea.

If this is true:
Jared Loughner has been making death threats by phone to many people in Pima County including staff of Pima Community College, radio personalities and local bloggers. When Pima County Sheriff’s Office was informed, his deputies assured the victims that he was being well managed by the mental health system. It was also suggested that further pressing of charges would be unnecessary and probably cause more problems than it solved as Jared Loughner has a family member that works for Pima County. Amy Loughner is a Natural Resource specialist for the Pima County Parks and Recreation.
Read the whole thing.
If true, then he and his department are culpable in these deaths. And it is folks like them that make the NICS check worthless.

Y' see....I had a Ipod. The "Classic" model..... I liked it...then a few years ago, I got an Ipod Touch for Christmas...I liked that even better. I liked the apps, I liked the Wi-Fi. I liked a lot of the features.
So when my phone began to die, I naturally wanted an IPhone. I even waited, because there was no way in hell that I was going to sign up again with ATT for another 2 years (one experience with them was MORE than enough, thank you). I liked my current carrier, Verizon....I eagerly searched every rumor on the net to find out when your current contract exclusive with ATT expired....I waited for 6 months, hanging on every rumor that even hinted that Verizon was going to get the IPhone.....When I read that you had signed up again with ATT for another year of exclusivity, I stopped waiting.
I researched for alternatives....I needed another phone, and since I couldn't get an IPhone on the carrier of my choice (Verizon), I looked at their offerings. I found Android. And It Was Good.
7 months ago, I purchased a DroidX...I liked it. It does everything I wanted my IPhone to do. It even syncs up to my ITunes library really nicely. 2 mouse clicks more, and I have all my music. What do I need an IPhone for?
You ass. You could have had me become a real IPhone fanboi. Yet you teased, and hinted too long. I grew tired of waiting. I grew tired of the hints and the delays. I grew tired of feeling like the guy on a date with the c--ktease girl. I asked another girl to dance.....
Now Google Android phones are in the market. Once again, much like Apple computers were years ago, you will be relegated to a niche market. You let the world discover another option. Android will beat you. Your once world-class IPhone is now just another choice out of many. You could have been king of the world, yet you chose to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. You will sell many IPhones. No doubt the customers of ATT are salivating for the chance to jump to another carrier. Many of them will buy a Verizon-enabled IPhone. But the (millions?) rest of us have tasted the Android system. And we no longer want an IPhone. You pissed away a chance to dominate. I hope that ATT gave you lotsof cash to forgo all the money that you could have made from folks like me. I bet they didn't pay you enough. The rest of us will buy Android. And you will lose more market share.
You are a fool. And you have lost. You just don't know it yet. The downfall of the IPhone will become an example in Marketing 101 on How To Fail. In 5 years or so, you will follow Blackberry and RIM into oblivion in the phone market.

Shooter
First of all: I think that the shooting in Tucson is a tragedy. No matter who did it, no matter what the reasons, no matter what the political affiliations of ANY of the parties, at no point can I see any reason or set of circumstances where this is in any way justified.
My condolences go out to the victims and to the families of the victims, both the survivors and the others who were not lucky enough to survive.
I'd point out that the perpetrator (alleged) of the incident was apprehended not by police, but by bystanders. By people who chose not to run, or to hide, or to crouch down and hope that they were missed, but rather chose to DO SOMETHING, and in doing so, put themselves into harms way to stop this.
While I think it is a tragedy that the Tucson shooter did what he did, one thing stands out in the press reporting of the incident:
He doesn't fit any of their preconceived notions. None. They tried to link him to the right, and that wouldn't fit or fly.....No links to Palin, Bush, the NRA, GOA, Rush Limbaugh, or anything else that fit their preconceived notions of who would be the type of person who would do such a thing. None of them. Despite their questioning of every classmate, of every neighbor, of every person who might have served coffee to this individual, they cannot find anything that points Right...nothing....Yet they keep trying. The spin machine is chugging merrily along, yet can't seem to get any traction. One would almost think that there was a playbook for such incidents. I find that thought sad and disturbing.......but sadly not impossible. The sad fact is that he was a leftist (if anything)...He was a flag burner, whose favorite books were "Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto...His classmates describe him as "extremely liberal"..... Yet they blame the Right for this....I would hope that the Left would decry his actions as strongly as the Right does....
The reality is that few of the people who the MSM's first thought to blame are likely to perpetrate such an atrocity. Few Right leaning people are likely to be so violent. Period. While our side of the fence has it's share of truly psychotic individuals, even those individuals are less inclined to do violence in such a manner than many left leaning folks. If those of us on the Right were half as violent as the left leaning MSM thought, and made us out to be, then such incidents would be greater in scope and significantly more prevalent.
And were they to choose to do so, they are likely to do an even greater amount of slaughter. But it seems that the left has the more violent, sociopathic individuals (and more of them). Why? Is it the lack of accountability in their social morality? Is it a cultural thing, where such violent protest is acceptable and accepted? Is it an admiration of the anarchists that they so revere? Or is it something else? How, in any worldview is such slaughter ever acceptable?
And what does it say about those people with an agenda that they would be so quick to blame their opponents and to use such a tragedy in an attempt to further their own goals even before the blood has been cleaned up? I find that sick.
I hope they fry his ass, slowly. And if, as alleged, he has an accomplice, I hope they catch him or her as well, and fry them too.

Kwestion for the legal beagles....
If I (a CHL holder) were to take employment at a facility, either privately or publicly owned, where the rules of employment (or even presence!) prohibit the carriage of firearms (see also: gun free victim disarmament zone), and something untoward should happen while working in such area.....
Can I sue for damages if I am injured (or can my surviving kin sue if I am killed) on the grounds that the burden of personal security has been taken from me and is therefore the task and responsibility of the institution which employs me? (or at which I must attend, should it be, say...a university?)
How about if I am robbed while attending such a place.....If I am prohibited from exercising my rights to secure my person, do I have the rights to sue for remuneration from the facility which prohibits the carriage of my personal defense firearm?
How about states or cities which prohibit the carriage of firearms? Or municipal courts buildings and such?
Do those entities which prohibit carriage of firearms for any reason have liability if someone is attacked or robbed in their area of prohibition? Is there a difference between private entities and public entities?
Are there court cases which would set precedence?
Enquiring minds and all that.....
Can I sue for damages if I am injured (or can my surviving kin sue if I am killed) on the grounds that the burden of personal security has been taken from me and is therefore the task and responsibility of the institution which employs me? (or at which I must attend, should it be, say...a university?)
How about if I am robbed while attending such a place.....If I am prohibited from exercising my rights to secure my person, do I have the rights to sue for remuneration from the facility which prohibits the carriage of my personal defense firearm?
How about states or cities which prohibit the carriage of firearms? Or municipal courts buildings and such?
Do those entities which prohibit carriage of firearms for any reason have liability if someone is attacked or robbed in their area of prohibition? Is there a difference between private entities and public entities?
Are there court cases which would set precedence?

The question is: what cause? Raising money for the charity or supporting the charitable organization?

See, the issue with any organization, be it a private thing or a government entity...No matter how they start, they become, as they grow, a money hungry self serving ever growing bureaucracy.
I find this really no different than the NRA or the NAACP. Both organizations exist for themselves first. Why should the Komen foundation be any different?

New Blog
Og has invited me to collaborate with him on a new blog....Made In America. Please, as the list grows, take the time to check out our suggestions and, if possible, consider purchasing these products that are "Made in America".
Please, if you know a product that is competitive with another popular item made in another country, email me and I'll research it and put it up.
Buying "Made in America" helps our fellow citizens, helps our economy (and trade imbalance), and keeps our industry (what is left of it) inside OUR borders. It helps our country, and ultimately our national security by keeping a manufacturing base inside our borders.
But most of all, it helps keep our citizens employed.

I guess that the copies of the Constitution don't have the fourth amendment in them in Florida....("no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause")...

I got a rifle fer Christmas
Well, sorta.
It's a kit.....a "do it yerself". Midwest Chick bought it for me for Christmas!
Actually, just what I wanted.
.50 cal...... Flintlock..... Charcoal burner.
Gonna take a LOT of work polishing the metalwork....and then the roughed out stock is gonna take even more.
I figure 3 months of evenings.....
(the first 90% of the project takes 90% of the time, the last 10% takes the other 90% of the time.....)
So far, I have cleaned up all the burrs on the barrel cutouts and have polished with 600 grit and started on the 1000 grit paper....The barrel is cleaning up nicely. Og has offered to blue the metalwork when I am done, and I may take him up on that, but I may choose to brown it too. I have lots of time to think about that and decide before I am done with the deburring and polishing....Suggestions?

Seems that the Germans are getting tired of bailing out the more.....Socialist countries.
And when they can't control the spending of those same countries, they are getting pissed.
I give it 2 years tops until the Deutschemark is used again. And shortly after, the Euro becomes worth less than the paper upon which it is printed......

Now if we could only break some of the more socialist states here in the US away from the Dollar.......

Jesus, this is true...
If you don't believe me, spend time watching folks at a gun show. So many weekend commandos that it is laughable. And a lot of people make a lot of money selling a lot of shit to these same weekend commandos...who have no idea what to do with the stuff they just bought. But they think that they are ready.
Look: I think we all should prepare for TSHTF (to an extent), and we all should have mastered the firearms which we own. I don't practice enough ....in conditions that are not sunny, warm, and comfy. I too need to find a better, longer range. I too spend too little on ammo. Life does get in the way of my shooting.....But I do use the tools I have, and have acquired the knowledge that I have though a lot of work, and never thought I could buy skills and knowledge. I know and understand that these things require work and practice. And I really don't care what the SEALS use. Their goals and requirements are different than mine.
But seriously. THIS is what so many conversations are like. This is so true to form for so may people. They think that they can buy the skills and the knowledge. And sadly, you can't. Skills have to be learned and then kept up. Shooting skills have a shelf life if not refreshed often. Survival knowledge can't be learned from a movie. And what works on your AO may not work in mine and vice versa.
$300 to $500 for an all purpose rifle..... CQB through home defense through 1K yds shooting. All are different tasks, and each task requires a different tool to do it well. Compromise means that your tool will do nothing well. Pick the tool for the job and learn to use it.
And those people with the 1000's of lbs of supplies for the radioactive mutant slobbering zombie apocalypse.......I always ask people....how are you gonna carry all that SHTF stuff? 1000 rounds of ammo is HEAVY, and so is 90 days worth of food...and you'll need a car/truck (or mules) for that and all the rest.....
When people ask me what is the best rifle, I too suggest that they start with a .22 so that they can practice.... FIRST. Then save their money for a decent suite of rifles. Your equipment can't give you skills. Only practice can. Better equipment can make you better, but a skilled marksman can make do with lesser equipment, and he will likely be better than the newbie with zero practice and a $10k rifle. And all the money spent on a rifle (or pistol or any other tool) is wasted if you don't practice.
Seriously, watch the two videos. It's an eye opener (or should be) for many folks, and a good laugh for the rest of us. I almost spit my coffee on the keyboard.

You'd think our legislators would have at least tried to do things in the legal way, even if the outcome would have been the same....
"All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills."
Or, we could just have them watch Schoolhouse Rock:
If a bill is passed in an unconstitutional manner, do we have to abide by it's contents?

Bye-Bye
Maybe we will see this again, a-la Start Trek (TMP).
Either way it is cool that a man-made object is leaving the solar system.

SNOW and people
So I have spent the past 24 hours in the presence of people who were stranded by the snow in NW Indiana.
Couple of observatons:
Pay attention to the weather along your route: A significant number of people were stranded because they had NO IDEA that there was to be any significant weather action for the duration of their trip.
Have equipment adequate to the task: Bald tires in winter are a BAD IDEA. So are worn out wipers, failed defrost fans, non working lights, etc.
Wear or carry appropriate clothing for the weather you can reasonably expect. Shoes, coats hats,gloves, etc. Your expected trip may be from house to car to another house, but you may have to detour from your route, and end up walking in those same office shoes, that thin coat, and REALLY need that hat to keep your ears a part of your physique.
To keep yourself from being beaten by your fellow stranded travellers, be on your best behavior around those who, like you, are stressed and out of their normal environment.
Whining might get your ass beat.
