on this day

In 1812

The New Madrid earthquake happened.

Wonder what effect it would have if it happened today?

I do know that a lot of people would be hurt, and many more would likely starve before FEMA got it's shit together.

Given the current population of the area, and the un-preparedness of virtually all the public, very bad.
FEMA and the states don't have the ability to deal effectively with a catastrophe on this scale.
I wouldn't be suprised at deaths in the 7 figures, with injured in the 8 figures.
I've been to Reelfoot Lake. It's hard to imagine that much damage in a few minutes.

On the bright side I would more than likely be cut off from work for months if it happens.
