The 89-year-old died in her home in the resort after suffering a heart attack.

As a young woman Miss Nearne was recruited by the Special Operations Executive and was captured by the Nazis in France but never talked about it.

Military charities donated cash and a local funeral director offered to fund a service more befitting a war heroine.

How many heroes have we, that are anonymous? Who die alone, unlamented because they are forgotten?

How many towns would have the streets lined in mourning and respect for those heroes when they pass?

How soon?

Until this happens here in the US?

One way another, despite the current governments hopes and dreams, the US will have to cut things in order to pay its bills. When that happens, how soon until the protests begin....the anarchy, the destruction of businesses and government offices....The rioting and strikes and violence? The Spaniards saw it coming, and negotiated a peaceful, orderly strike...The Spaniards are, for the most part, a civil, orderly people....Not so much for Greece. And we shall see what happens when the French begin their cuts.

While there are a lot of fingers pointing in many directions as to who is to blame for all of the mess that the financial markets and European governments have gotten themselves into, ultimately it really doesn't matter whose fault it is.....The fact is that the wheels are coming off the socialist states bus. And those folks who depend on that socialist state to eat will get angry....and angry people riot and do violence. "Bread and circuses) are not enough...

So what happens when things here become like things in Europe? We are on that path.....it is merely a matter of time until we are in the same situation. We are merely a "less socialist" state than they. But a too high percentage of our population is dependant upon that same state to feed, house and clothe them. Add in the high percentage of retired (or soon to retire) local, state and federal workers ( and maybe the military retired folks?) who are about to find out that there is no money in their retirement accounts and things might well get.....interesting.

I am not sure how we prepare for such an eventuality.

Religion of Peace

When I was but a boy, my parents used the phrase "actions speak louder than words".

Follow the link, you decide. Peaceful? Or something other than peaceful. I have always held the belief that there are many Muslims with whom I could peacefully coexist.....But I see no condemnation of the fatwa by any Muslim groups. In fact, I waited a week before posting about this to see if any condemnation was forthcoming. I have seen none. 

I followed her lead, as did many others. I posted a lighthearted cartoon about Mohammed on this blog. Instead of going after a woman, I urge those who would threaten the cartoonist to come see me and express their displeasure. I betcha that I pay the ferrymans fee before I check out. And I bet your jihad warriors find out if the 72 virgins are real.

Wanna express your displeasure boys? Start here...Start with me instead of a woman. Be a warrior. Attack a target that fights back. It's easy to threaten a woman or a child..... not so much when it is someone who will give you a run for your money.


Let us go find out about those virgins.

So I was at my local downtown coffeehouse Friday evening, to get my weekly dose of caffeine and liberal propaganda thought, and I see that they have a pumpkin painted pink on the counter......"that's odd...." I say to myself....

So I ask the proprietor why they have a pumpkin, carefully painted pink, on display.

"It's our support for Breast Cancer something or other", she replies...

"Should have used melons", I replied, without conscious thought.

The guy at the table nearby nearly passed his cup of coffee through his left nostril.

I may not be able to return there...

And that is sad, because I have finally trained the staff how I like my coffee.

Since the LEO in Vegas seem to (by all reports) overreact to any report of "a man with a gun"....


If I lived in Vegas (thank god I don't) every time I saw an officer, uniformed or not, I think that I would call it in....Being a good citizen and all.

"Hello, 911 operator? Yeah, I am at the corner of 9th and Sycamore and there is this guy acting kinda....well, different....He's kinda tense...and he's watching everybody closely and acting kinda suspicious.....He seems to be looking at everyone in a kinda calculating manner......like he is evaluating every person he sees. He's kinda intimidating though..... ...yeah, and he's wearing some kind of uniform.....he has a gun! OMG he has a gun!.......No, he's not threatening anyone....yet.....But I thought you might like to know and maybe have someone check him out......I mean, it could be nothing....but you never know."

Imagine the chaos, and the lesson that the LVPD might learn from this.....Let us hope they don't shoot any of their fellow officers....

So will the Obama administration lose in court?

Seems that tomorrow is the beginning of the federal case between Delphi non union workers and the feds.

Seems that the UAW folks got the golden parachute via TARP funds, but the non-union folks got the shaft. And they want fair treatment. Who can blame them?

While the issue of underfunded pension plans is one of great magnitude, and will become greater in the next few years, the fact is that the TARP funds used in the Bailout of GM were used to pay for the UAW folks pension benefits....no doubt as a payoff for all their help in getting Mr. O elected. I personally think that the bailout should not have happened, and all pensions should have been treated as the non union Delphi workers pensions were....Part of a bankruptcy.  But if the union folks get the bennies of the government bailouts, so should the rest of the workers.

And I hope they win their case.

And no matter what, if they are that stupid, you'll be dead, and after the paperwork is forged finished, they'll likely congratulate him/her and your family friends will be grieving your loss (and your enemies will be dancing in the streets).

And no, no, no.... this is not an indictment of all police officers. I personally know cops who are on both ends of the spectrum.....there are Heroes and Scumbags in all departments.

But which end of the spectrum you are on won't matter afterwards.

redefining poor.....

How poor are today's "poor" in the USA? ?

Lets see:

"Overall, the typical American defined as poor by the government has a car, air conditioning, a refrigerator, a stove, a clothes washer and dryer, and a microwave. He has two color televisions, cable or satellite TV reception, a VCR or DVD player, and a stereo. He is able to obtain medical care. His home is in good repair and is not overcrowded. By his own report, his family is not hungry and he had sufficient funds in the past year to meet his family's essential needs. While this individual's life is not opulent, it is equally far from the popular images of dire poverty conveyed by the press, liberal activists, and politicians."

and:

"As a group, America's poor are far from being chronically undernourished. The average consumption of protein, vitamins, and minerals is virtually the same for poor and middle-class children and, in most cases, is well above recommended norms. Poor children actually consume more meat than do higher-income children and have average protein intakes 100 percent above recommended levels. Most poor children today are, in fact, supernourished and grow up to be, on average, one inch taller and 10 pounds heavier than the GIs who stormed the beaches of Normandy in World War II."

Not to mention:

I have seen poor people. I have yet to see such abject poverty here in the US. While life for many at the bottom of the economic ladder may not be as easy as they would like it to be, for most "poor", their lives are materially better than their ancestors were in 1940.

And let us not forget that most "poverty" in the US is the result of continued bad decision making ( 'cause there are few negative consequences to the individual for those bad decisions) and often just plain laziness. Not in all cases, but in most.

And the continued redefinition of "poor" will not change that fact.

Constitution day

Today is the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States. The one document which makes this country stand out from all others. The rules by which we are supposed to run this country......The rules which make the country a beacon  and destination of home and freedom for nearly all other peoples on the world.

What would the original signers who wrought this document think today of what we and our ancestors have made with it, and how we are ignoring it? How might they comment upon the country which exists today and the network of laws which violate the rules laid down in that document 223 years ago today?

I think that they'd be checking their powder and knapping the flints on their muskets, preparing for another revolution. They'd be buying rope in 10 yard lengths and looking for sturdy trees.

If you haven't read the Constitution lately, do so.

And if you really want an education, take the time to read the Federalist Papers also. Link at the sidebar.

Then think about the country as it exists today compared to what was envisioned 223 years ago, by those men who fixed their signature to a document,and in doing so, laid the framework for the greatest, most free country in the world, and created the Land Of Opportunity for those willing to come here.

And be thankful that you live in country where, although somewhat tattered, the Constitution is still (mostly) the law of the land.

Why you need to have a firearm ready

and be prepared to use it. Plus, LOCK YOUR DOORS!

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.....then they have to set up a perimeter and mill around deciding what to do........

Would the linked incident have ended differently had the homeowners had a firearm? Who knows? But since we cannot rely on the police to do more than take pictures of the bodies and file a report afterwards, prudence would require that you have the means to defend yourself (and especially the training to use it!). Having one might have made a difference in this case. Might not have too. We'll never know.

But the fact remains that the police, despite having many opportunities to do something to change the outcome, chose not to. And their inaction led to at least 2 deaths, possibly three. I respect my local police. I wouldn't want their jobs. It is a hard one, and it often requires judgement calls which, if made wrongly, could lead to them being disciplined or dismissed. But in this case, they failed. Failed utterly to live up to the trust which the citizens had placed upon them. Failed to do their job. Failed to save the lives of the citizens they were sworn to protect. And that is a tragedy for all involved.


People think that I am crazy because I am armed nearly all the time, even when working in my yard. Sometimes I do too. Then incidents like this happen, and I remember why I carry, even in my own yard (and I am seldom far a way from a firearm in my home). I live in a nice "safe" neighborhood. Things like the above "just don't happen here". Except when they do.

You'd have thought that the police would have learned the lessons from such incidents as the Columbine HS disaster. But have they? Apparently not all of them have.

You are the first line of defense for your (and your family's) safety. There ARE wolves out there. Be a sheepdog.

I am sure that everyone else has commented on this, but....


Hey, Mr Steele & the rest of the RNC:

Figure it out yet? We don't want "DNC lite", or "Less Liberal". We want C.O.N.S.E.R.V.A.T.I.V.E..
Not "hold your nose and vote for our candidate even if you dislike him/her, but its OK because he/she has the "R" label, so you should vote for them anyway...."

Your failure to support true conservative candidates is making you irrelevant in today's elections. And the fact that you fail to pass the money back out to the voters choice to continue their campaign is making you even more irrelevant. Keep it up, and you will soon go the way of the Triceratops and the Dodo. "Daddy, what is a Republican?"....."they died out in the early part of the 21st century son.....No one fed them. No campaign donations or votes came their way so they simply disappeared....starved to death. Replaced by the Tea Party......and Libertarians."

Support true conservatives, and you'll win more often than you'll lose, folks. And even if that winner isn't your first choice, their philosophy and the way they'll vote will be a LOT more to your liking than the liberal candidates will be.

You betcha.

Keep it up, assholes, and you'll be replaced. Just as mammals replaced the lizards.....Only faster. Change, or you'll not get one thin dime from me. I'll take that money and send it to the candidates directly. We has the Internet and such today, and really don't need you to help distribute the cash anymore.

2012 can be won. But not if you keep going the way you are. Run another "Less Liberal" candidate, and you'll experience another loss.

And I, for one, can't stomach much more "change".

Stimulus money FAIL

So the feds cannot even seem to spend the "Stimulus Money" correctly...

Seems that $823K of it was spent in AFRICA teaching men how to properly wash their genitals.

1. I don't give a rats ass how beneficial to the recipients this might be, this money is NOT in any way a stimulus for  the US economy.

B. Who really gives a shit of these folks can't figure out how to wash their pee-pee. I understand that AIDS is still an issue and all that but wtf?

III. Whoever approved this expenditure should be shot, not merely fired or demoted...We waste enough US taxpayer money in Africa as it is, much less "Stimulus Money" that is really borrowed from future wage earners.

Either that, or just admit that the "Stimulus" was just a payoff for special interests and a power grab......You can't have it both ways.

Yeah, they are gonna spend our health care money SO wisely, I am sure......

Remember....And be angry.

I remember the day well. Watching the news reports of the first plane, thinking it was a horrible accident. (I lived my life in "condition yellow" personally, but as far as thinking about attacks on our nation, I was stuck in "condition white". So, I was not thinking terrorism as I turned off the TV and left for work.....10 minutes later, listening to the radio (Mancow in the Morning from Chicago), I realized that the US had been ATTACKED. Who/why, etc didn't matter.

15 long minutes later, I was at work, in front of a TV, watching the entire rest of the day unfold. I told my employees: "The world as we knew it has just changed forever". I was right, but I was also wrong.

I shall never forget the feeling of anger, and hurt, and despair as I saw those towers fall. For the nation it was, really, a pinprick. To a country as large, rich, and prosperous as the US, the loss of those towers (and, sadly, those people) was minuscule...less than a rounding error on any balance sheet. Yet it was, to many of us, a terrible blow. OUR COUNTRY HAD JUST BEEN ATTACKED.


For some of us, the world has indeed changed....forever. For many, however, it has returned to its pre-9-11 state of unconsciousness and unawareness. I am saddened that so many can forget so easily.

Is it because the typical American is as bad as the rest of the world thinks? Shallow and with an attention span only slightly longer than the beginning of the next news cycle? Or is it that they care not to face the fear that the threat brings to their world.....?

For me, there is indeed fear. Fear has never stopped me, but it is there. ...But there is an overriding anger that fades the fear into the background.

Anger that there are those who are so intolerant that they will not leave us in the US alone, that they cannot live their own lives in their own ways and leave our country's citizens to live ours in our way.

Anger that those folks would dare attack the US and its citizens. With no clear military objective except to HURT others in this country....Indiscriminately. Just because they are citizens of arguably the richest and most powerful nation in the world.

Anger that those folks would attack us just because of who we are....simply different than them.

I am also angry that there are those in our country who fail to see the reason we need to stamp out each and every cell of the attackers. Even if it means a scorched earth policy. We began the war in Afghanistan with this intent, but allowed the weak and soft souls in our government and our media to weaken that resolve, and dilute the focus of our intent. Who forced us to stop our pursuit at the Pakistan border, and allow those in that country to lie, to dissemble, to actively aid those who were our enemies because they were of the same culture as our attackers. Anger at those who, by preventing action, aided our enemies. (and make no mistake, "Radical Islam" is indeed the enemy of the US and its citizens, no matter what their culture, religion, or skin color might be). Anger that those people caused the US to fail in its pursuit of the enemies of the citizens of this country, and our way of life.

I am angry for the loss of freedom which these people have forced upon the citizens of our nation. The weakening of our freedoms..... Perhaps this is indeed their goal....I do not know.

And most of all, I am angry at many of my fellow Americans for forgetting. The attacks themselves I may be able to forgive. The failures of our government I can forgive. But I cannot forgive my countrymen who forget, or who simply fail to care. Who fail to remember...who will, if the rest of us let them, allow this to happen again.

I shall not forget. And I sincerely hope that you will not as well.

After a great deal of thought regarding the antipathy to violence which occurred in comments and such over at Roberta's site in the past few days...I have to quote this portion of a great speech. Oddly prescient when viewed from today's perspective. You may feel the same way. Or not. At some point of provocation, these words will become much more relevant to you.....

"Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Have we anything new to offer upon the subject? Nothing. We have held the subject up in every light of which it is capable; but it has been all in vain. Shall we resort to entreaty and humble supplication? Read the whole thing. Understand  that the enemy is not the same, but the logic is. I do not advocate war, nor violence. But the question which Mr. Henry asks is a valid question today. How would you answer him, were he to appear before you? I know my answer. Do you?

Free money

There was flooding a few weeks ago in Chicago, Northeastern Illinois (really all of the northern part of the state) and some parts of NW Indiana. Really heavy torrential rains.

Did the federal government show up immediately and help???  Nope

The State government??? Nope.

But now....weeks afterwards. We have this help. Free money. Free food stamps.

WEEKS after the floods. And NO VERIFICATION THAT THE RECIPIENT HAD SUFFERED ANY DAMAGE....All you had to do was show proof that you lived in the ZIP CODE.....

Is there anything the government does well ? 

Hey, what the hell, it's not like it will make a difference in the deficit or anything....
